Clubs for young people urged to support Street Athletics event
West Berkshire Council’s Family resource Service is teaming up with an Olympic medal winning athlete to hold a ‘Street Athletics’ event for young people in August and is currently looking for support from local clubs and groups to make the day a success.
The event aims to encourage young people to take part in sport or other physical activity and is being organised in partnership with experienced sports company ‘Nuff Respect’ led by Linford Christie and Darren Campbell.
‘Street Athletics’ challenges youngsters from different backgrounds to compete in sprinting 60m as well as showcasing their musical or dance talents in front of others and potentially at the Street Athletics Final in London.
The event is open to young people from all over the district and will take place on 12 August on Pigeons Farm Road in Greenham. Members of the local community are being involved in helping to organise the day.
To ensure as many youngsters as possible take part and so the complete range of activities and interests are available on the day, organisers are appealing to youth clubs or groups from around the district to get involved. They are also keen to hear from any businesses or charities that might be able to help in the fundraising effort to raise the £10,000 needed.
Lorna Hunt, Head of Children’s Services at West Berkshire Council said: “This is a very exciting event and promises to be a positive experience for young people from across the district and especially from Greenham. I would urge anyone who runs a youth club or similar group to get in touch with us so they can be part of the day.”
