The City Project

Date: 20th March 2010

Venue: Fair Close Day Centre

Type: Other

Newbury has many areas that are of particular historical importance. Those of us lucky enough to live in South Newbury will be aware of just how beautiful an area known colloquially as ‘The City’ is.  The area that surrounds Argyle Road and the roads leading to and from it, have interesting stories to tell, fascinating architecture, interesting former residents and perhaps more importantly a history that has grown around care for the poor and sick.

Two local societies have joined forces in order to commence a long-term project that will, we hope, protect, preserve, educate and celebrate ‘The City’ for the benefit of current and future generations.

Over the years much as been written and photographed about this area. We dare say much has been forgotten and could be remembered. Therefore your own knowledge albeit anecdotal or even family records could help piece together parts of ‘The City’ that we have all yet to learn about.  The Newbury Society together The Newbury and District Field Club are working towards a special day of talks and walks on Saturday 20th March at Fair Close Day Centre in Newtown Road by kind and special permission of Age Concern Newbury. Experts will be on hand to give historical talks and to set out some of the aspirations with regard to The City.

The day commences at 10 am where there will be an exhibition of local information. There will be 3 short guided walks of The City at 11 am, 1pm and 3pm starting at Fair Close Day Centre.  Short presentations will take place at 2pm lead by Garry Poulson The former 400th Anniversary  Mayor of Newbury, Phil Wood  The President of The Newbury and District Field Club, Duncan Coe of West Berkshire Councils Heritage Service and Dr David Peacock and expert on local history and the Jack of Newbury history in particular.

This long-term project could see interpretation materials created, regular guided walks and other work that will contribute to an architectural appraisal, which will lead to a long-term understanding of the area.

We hope that you will join us at Fair Close for the presentations and one of the walks.
