Tips for decreasing waste

Recycling can help save materials and energy, but cutting down on waste in the first place is even better.  Why not try taking your own bag when you go shopping and repair broken items or find a good home for anything you don't want anymore.

Reducing waste

Nearly a fifth of household waste is packaging from retail purchases. Try thinking about the following when you are shopping:

  • take your own bag when you go shopping - 10 billion plastic bags are handed out by supermarkets each year
  • register with the Mailing Preference Service and avoid junk mail
  • try not to waste food - this will also reduce your shopping bill!
  • avoid those products that contain unnecessary packaging
