Welcome to Village Design Statements
A village or neighbourhood Design Statement is a document that describes the distinctive characteristics of the locality, and provides design guidance to influence future development and improve the physical qualities of the area.
Since their inception in 1996, they have proved to be of much greater value. Design Statements provide a framework for local people to collectively determine how their community should develop and grow and how such developments can be in keeping with the local surroundings. Drawing up the Design Statement provides an opportunity for communities to describe how they feel the physical character of their parish or neighbourhood can be enhanced.
Such a document also helps developers to understand local views and perceptions, enabling them to propose new buildings that will probably gain local support rather than generate conflict and opposition.
